The Basics
Name: Roy Mustang Alias: The Flame Alchemist Age: 35 (This is approximate; Roy is listed as being 29, which I assume is at the beginning of the Elric Brothers’ journey, when Ed is 12. By the end of the series, Ed is 16, and it is generally assumed, if not actual fact, that Ed is 18 at the time of the movie. Therefore, 6 years would have passed, making Roy 35.) Gender: Male Rank: Private (This is an assumption on the basis that it never specifies a rank, but does say that Roy is merely an enlisted man in the movie.)
Appearance
Roy’s hair is as black as a raven’s wing, and glossy; the kind of luscious locks that women sigh in envy over. His eyes are not the simple flat black that so many of those with dark eyes are cursed with, nor the beady little eyes of a criminal, but three-dimensional pools of ink. They frequently glint like faceted obsidian in the lights, showing hidden determination and a will as strong as iron. They also hint to relatives from the East, being narrow and somewhat almond-shaped. His muscles are very well-toned and firm, though he is more sinewy than “buff”. He is certainly not at all like Major Armstrong. Roy is of medium height and always uses it to his advantage. His face is very round, giving the impression of a younger age. His skin is slightly paler than normal, giving him a striking look as it contrasts against his dark hair and eyes.
Personality Roy’s personality is not easily understood or discerned. Upon meeting him, he seems rather shallow. To all appearances, he is a depressed, worthless man who is now a complete hermit. After spending a longer amount of time with him and around his former subordinates, you will realize that there is more to him than that. There is still passion and fire, though it is buried deep under layers of guilt.
Roy was once idealistic, believing previously in a brighter future, but was also prone to severe depression. He feels hopeless sometimes, like he has still, after all of his work, accomplished nothing for the country he loves.
He is quiet where he used to be boisterous, and sedate where he used to be full of life. Perhaps it is his age catching up with him, or perhaps it is something more. Either way, the years have changed him in many ways.
After seeing Edward again after the years of separation when Ed was on the other side of the gate, Roy found his resolve again. He left behind his tired, listless attitude in favor of a more proactive and problem-solving one. It is true that he will never return to his original seemingly carefree ways, but he may very well find the strength and determination to try to rise in the military again, in hopes of helping his country.
History
Roy was orphaned at a young age, and was raised by his aunt, Madame Christmas. Little is known, at best, about his younger years.
As he got older, he studied basic alchemy with Berthold Hawkeye, a well-known alchemist who also was well-versed in flame alchemy, a style where the user manipulates water in the air in order to create flame. He enlisted in the military, and returned to ask his teacher to teach him flame alchemy to help the people, but instead found his teacher on death’s doorstep. Berthold told him that it was up to his daughter to teach Roy flame alchemy, if she chose. Roy took care of funeral arrangements and told Riza, Berthold’s daughter that if she needed anything, that she could call him.
Later on, we see that she has indeed taught him flame alchemy, and that he became a state alchemist. He did his duty silently in the war, but was deeply traumatized by the things he saw. He killed many innocents, and is haunted to this day by the things that he did. He said once that his blind eye could see the faces of all those he killed.
Roy rose in the ranks after the war to become a Colonel, and worked hard at his goal to become the Fuhrer in order to better the country. Eventually, with the help of his friends and subordinates, he uncovered the secret that the military was being run by the Homunculi.
In the end, he lost his eye in a fight with King Bradley, the Fuhrer, and quit his life as an alchemist. He took a position as a regular member of the army in the bleak North, seeming to view it as a sort of penitence for his prior wrongdoings.
In the movie, after he saw Edward again, Roy seemed to regain his resolve, and threw himself into motion, doing his best to help in the fight. At the very end of it all, we can assume that he destroyed the gate on the Amestris side, though it doesn’t actually show him doing it.
Roleplay Example
Roy was not happy. It had been another dull day, as most of his days now were.
He answered the phone and spoke with a few of his friends about trivial matters. He patrolled the surrounding areas. He exercised in an effort to keep himself on his toes. He even cleaned his tiny shack.
But there was really nothing to do.
That was when he had gotten the call from Riza. “Roy…” She had said, “We really need you here. I don’t know what’s happening, but I know it’s not good. There have been earthquakes, and we’re really starting to get concerned. Please…” And that was all it had really taken to get him interested.
So there he was, torn. Should he go? What would the situation be? Did they really need him, in the end, or would he be ineffectual as always? Questions raced through his mind and his legs itched to pace the small room. Eventually he relented, taking step after step and getting no closer to an answer.
Perhaps she was merely unsure. With the Homunculi gone, what other threats were there? An uprising? His days of dealing with those were gone…
Roy had to shake his head to clear it of the screams that echoed in his ears.
No, surely Riza wouldn’t ask his help with something like that. So what could it be?
Perhaps…no. It was impossible. It couldn’t have anything to do with the Elrics, could it? Of course not. Edward was dead, and Alphonse…well, he was somewhere doing something. If he was dead Roy would have heard.
Hoenheim was long gone, though nobody knew where. Rumor had it that he had shown up in Risembool a few years ago, and Roy wondered if the boys had been able to see their father again. He really hoped so; it would have meant so much to Al.
But back to the matter at hand…could it be because of an Elric? Impossibilities seemed to be their favorite things to flout, after all.
And why not? They had come back from death’s door before, so why shouldn’t they be able to return from the other side?
But even the Elrics had their limits…Edward had limits. And it was silly to hope that he could return. Roy chided himself mentally for even entertaining such a ridiculous thought.
Should he really go get on that train? Did he really want to know what kind of chaos was waiting in Central?
Did he really have a choice?
Since she had called, he decided he’d better answer. If Riza asked it of him, she surely had a good reason. She always had. For all the years he’d known her, she had never once let Roy down. Not a single time. He had trusted his back to her, after all.
And now she asked something of him. Something crucial, it seemed.
Roy sighed and glanced over at the rod his clothes hung on. “Well…Looks like I’ve got a train to catch tonight.”
